Before we dish about the Retinol sandwich method, it's important to understand the Key Ingredient.

Retinol is a subtype of Retinoid, a powerful compound derived from Vitamin A. There are several types of Retinoids, with Retinol being the most common. Retinoids are considered the gold standard youth-boosting ingredient by skincare professionals because of their impressive ability to address a variety of skincare concerns. Regular use of a Retinoid, like Retinol, can help improve the appearance of Fine Lines + Wrinkles, pores, and uneven tone, as well as help enhance skin’s natural radiance.

WHAT IS RETINOL?

WHAT IS THE RETINOL SANDWICH METHOD?

The Retinol sandwich method involves “sandwiching” your retinol between two layers of Moisturizer. The technique was created to help minimize some of the potential side effects of Retinol, like dryness, redness, and flakiness. Layering moisturizer helps deliver and lock in extra hydration in the skin, counteracting the dryness that can leads to irritation. This can be especially helpful for those who are new to Retinol or have very Dry or Sensitive Skin.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE RETINOL SANDWICH METHOD?

The biggest benefit of the Retinol Sandwich method is the potential reduction for irritation. It can help mitigate skin irritation, while still allowing the Retinol to provide youth-boosting benefits. The additional layer of hydration is also beneficial. Extra moisture can help soften and plump your skin and increase its natural radiance.

HOW TO MAKE A RETINOL SANDWICH?

The key to making the Retinol Sandwich method effective is to choose the right products. You’ll want to use or a serum containing Retinol, and a moisturizer that contains Hyaluronic Acid, Plant-based Glycerin, or another moisture-binding ingredient to help to lock in skin-soothing moisture.

Step 1:

Start by washing your face with a cleanser that removes impurities without stripping or drying your skin. We love Checks and Balances™ Milky Oil Cleanser + Makeup Remover for this exact reason. It effectively removes dirt, oil, and makeup and leaves your skin feeling clean and comfortable.

Step 2:

Apply a thin layer of moisturizer and allow it to fully absorb into the skin. Our favorite is Plantscription™ Lifting + Firming Cream. It helps refresh skin’s natural bounce and create a more lifted look. Plus, the ingredients, like Peptides and Hyaluronic Acid, pair nicely with Retinol.

Step 3:

Apply your Retinol serum and allow it to fully absorb. Finish with a thicker layer of the same moisturizer used in Step 2.

HOW OFTEN CAN YOU DO THE RETINOL SANDWICH METHOD?

Start by using the Retinol Sandwich method once or twice a week, at night, and gradually increase the frequency as your skin adjusts—following the directions on your retinol product. Your skin can become more susceptible to sunburn from retinol use, so be sure to wear sunscreen during the day.
